Unhappy Birthday

Deteriorating tracks on the Island Corridor.

March 19, 2026 marks the 15th anniversary of the end of trains on the Island Corridor. In 2011 unsafe track conditions brought VIA Rail passenger traffic to a grinding halt. Since then the corridor has continued to deteriorate, while fruitless time and money has been wasted on studies and reports.

Time for a change! FORT-VI has issued this news release to commemorate this Unhappy Birthday, calling for the conversion of the corridor to an active transportation greenway up the east coast of Vancouver Island. This has huge potential for economic benefits through tourism, not to mention the benefits to locals for recreation and commuting. Let's do it!
